Accessible Garden Design
How can you make a garden accessible?
Creating a garden that caters to the needs of individuals with mobility challenges requires thoughtful planning and the right materials. Recently, Prestige Lawns had the opportunity to transform a garden for a family that needed an accessible space that was both beautiful and functional. Here’s how we achieved it using artificial grass as the centrepiece of our design.
Optimising Garden Accessibility with Artificial Grass
One of the primary challenges in designing this garden was ensuring that the surface was both practical and comfortable for wheelchair use. For this project, we selected high-quality artificial grass, which provided several key benefits that addressed the family’s specific needs.
Before and After: Transforming the Grass Area
The garden, part of a new-build property, originally had a grass area with heavy clay soil, leading to poor drainage and frequent waterlogging. These conditions made the surface uneven and difficult to navigate, especially after rain.
To address this, Prestige Lawns improved the drainage by laying a proper sub-base and drainage layers before installing high-quality artificial grass. This transformation resulted in a smooth, level surface that remains accessible in all weather conditions.
Level Surface for Smooth Navigation
A level surface is crucial in any accessible garden design. Natural grass, especially in clay-rich soils, can often become uneven, leading to difficulties in manoeuvring and increasing the risk of accidents. With the installation of artificial grass, we were able to create a perfectly even surface that allows for easy movement and access to all areas of the garden. This consistent terrain ensures that everyone, including those using wheelchairs, can comfortably enjoy the outdoor space.
Comfortable and Cushioned Underfoot
In addition to being level, the artificial grass offers a soft, cushioned surface. This was particularly important for the family, as the garden space is frequently used for various activities, including exercises and relaxation. The softness of the grass provides a comfortable area where physical activities can be performed safely, reducing the risk of injury. Moreover, the space doubles as a soft seating area, perfect for gathering and enjoying the outdoors in comfort.
Long-Lasting and Low-Maintenance Solution
Durability is a key factor in any accessible garden design. The family needed a surface that could withstand daily use, including the movement of wheelchairs and other mobility aids. The artificial grass we installed is highly resilient, maintaining its appearance and functionality over time. This durability ensures that the garden remains a safe and accessible space for years to come, without the need for frequent maintenance or repairs, making it ideal for wheelchair-friendly garden designs.
Enhancing Mobility in the Garden
While Prestige Lawns focused on installing the artificial grass, it was essential to ensure that this feature integrated seamlessly into the overall garden design, enhancing mobility throughout the space.
Seamless Transitions Between Garden Zones
To complement the artificial grass installation, we ensured that it connected smoothly with other areas of the garden. The transition between the grassed area and any adjacent surfaces was made as seamless as possible, minimizing any height differences or barriers. This allows for effortless movement throughout the space, ensuring that the entire garden is easily accessible.
