How to Solve the Most Common Issues with Artificial Lawns

How to Solve the Most Common Issues with Artificial Lawns

People choose to buy and install synthetic lawns for several reasons, from convenience, wanting to save on their water bills or to craft a truly unique and beautiful landscape.

For some other people, there are very specific uses for the state-of-the-art turf, from putting greens to tennis courts.

Artificial lawns are easy to maintain and easy to fix if something goes wrong, but they do have rather unique care needs compared to natural grass, and there are ways to solve the most common problems people have with the material.

Different Types For Different Purposes

Before you order your perfect lawn, remember that not all artificial turf is the same. There are lawns designed for comfort, lawns designed for aesthetic appeal, and lawns designed for specialist purposes.

A good example of this is that when people inadvertently pick up putting green material, which has stiffer, shorter blades to guide golf balls compared to more comfortable lawn material.

Look into your different options and do not hesitate to get in touch with experts if you are uncertain about what you need.

Battling Smells

If you have pets, handling smells can be a hassle, but it does not have to be. Pick up a deodoriser designed for artificial lawn use and it can banish bad smells without causing any damage to the turf.

Moss and Weed Growth

One somewhat unexpected part of astroturf maintenance is that sometimes you may have to pull weeds and remove moss from the grass. This is generally caused by airborne weeds blowing in the wind landing on top of the artificial turf layer.

Whilst pulling weeds will work, as will using weedkillers, but the easiest and most effective way to get rid of weeds is applying a weedkiller and brushing up with a stiff brush to clear the artificial lawn, which will kill weeds before they can grow large enough to be an issue.

Failing that, a leaf blower can remove debris and stop mulch from building up and growing in your lawn.

Curled Up Edges

Properly installed, artificial grass will not lift at the ends, but if the lawn is not installed properly it can not only look unsightly but cause a tripping hazard.

Thankfully, there is a simple solution to this which involves the use of sturdy fixings on the edge of the lawn. This will stop them from lifting and look inconspicuous with the pile lifted up.

Drainage Issues

Possibly the biggest concern for lawn owners, a pooling lawn can be especially damaging.

Professional installation will stop this issue before it begins, as they will survey your sub-base and ensure it is fit for purpose and install drainage solutions to keep water from building up.

Flat Grass

Over 50 years of technological advances have stopped this from being as much of an issue, but some people have issues with the grass blades staying down if they are in high traffic areas or pets lie on the surface.

Modern infill solutions have confined this problem largely to the past, and a stiff brush can work to keep blades upright.

With Prestige Lawns we offer guarantees with all of our installs. This means Common Issues with Artificial Lawns won’t occur for long. We pride ourselves on our professional service and implement the correct techniques to make sure these issues don’t take place in the first place.
